Did you know that children should visit the dentist every six months just like their parents? Regular teeth cleanings and checkups help protect your son or daughter's precious smile, but there are also steps you can take at home to help them build good habits in between their regular dental appointments.

Here are some tips and tricks from your Barrie kid-friendly dental office, to help parents make dental care fun at home.

#1 Choose the Right Tools

There are all kinds of fun toothbrushes out there for kids these days. So whether it's their favourite colours or their top superhero, let them choose a toothbrush that inspires them when it's time to brush. You might also consider letting them use an electric toothbrush, which tends to make brushing easier for small hands.

Toothpaste can also be fun with unique flavours and colours. Let your son or daughter be involved in selecting their toothbrush and toothpaste so they'll look forward to taking care of their smile.

#2 Time It Right

Brushing is most effective when it takes place twice a day for at least two minutes each time. Use a timer to help ensure that your little one is spending enough time brushing their teeth. You can even make it fun with a "brushing song" that plays for two minutes when they brush their teeth.

#3 Reward Good Dental Habits

Children are often motivated by small prizes. For example, create a chart that tracks each day your little one completes two minutes of brushing. Then offer an award for continued good behaviour after a week or two. Building these good habits now will set your child up for success in the future.

#4 Lead By Example

Let your son or daughter see you brushing and flossing your teeth at home. You might also consider bringing them to your own dental appointments so they can see that the dental office is a friendly and welcoming place.
